SEE WHY DRINKING OF GARRI CAN BE RISKY TO YOUR HEALTH (MUST READ)

Garri had been for many ages a pupolar and tremendous foods among the african people especially the South Western part of Nigeria. Many a few people can't do without having a taste of garri in a day, some people's days won't complete if they don't drink garri without even considering its adverse side effect it may pose to health. To begin with, these are four probable side effects of eat-soaking garri:

1. IT MAY BE HARMFUL TO ULCER PATIENTS

Garri contains hydrocyanic acid. The cyanide constituent of the acid may be dangerous to health if ingested in large quantity. Many people have a low technical know-how on how a garri should be processed, to drastically reduced the cyanide contents, the cassava should be soaked for atleast 3days before drilling and grinding so as for the beneficial Microorganisms responsible for the fermentation process to actually ferments on it and degrade it. But it saddens these days, within a day, people processed garri without proper fermentation, cassava would have been soaked, grind, drill and fried without actual proper fermentation which raises the high chance of cyanide constituent in these garri.

When an ulcer patient takes garri that wasn't probably fermented, the cyanide reacts with the stomach mucosal walls and drills a sore hole around these places, not forgetting that the mucosal wall of the stomach is also lyzed with a concentrated hydrochloric acid which in absence of food may drill holes to the stomach walls. Therefore it's not advisable for ulceric patients to take garri but if they ever feel like taking garri, they should make sure they have taking a proper good food to linen their stomach before taking garri at all and their eat-soaking of garri should be in moderate, the garri should be a well drained fermented one.

2. IT MAY CAUSE VISION IMPAIRMENT.

It's not a fortune tell that taking much of garri may affect vision, these also due to higher content of cyanide which are contained in the cassava if not properly fermented. For.non-ulceric patients, its adviced to take the garri with liquid milk or mix palm oil with it to reduced vision impairment. Majority of people are using glasses today because of what they eat, aside being hereditary, so watch what you eat and take a well drained fermented garri.

3. IT MAY LEADS TO HYPERGLYCEMIA

Hyperglycaemia is an unusual high concentration of sugar in the blood. Taking much of garri may not be good for your health, garri contains complex sugars and if taking in much quantity can lead to diabetes and unnecessary obesity. Whether well fermented or not, garri should be taking in very lesser quantity if you are a lover of this food to avoid unwanted health problems.

4. IT CAN AFFECTS HARDENED SMOKERS

Thiocyanate levels can increase after cigarette smoking or exposure to cigarette smoke, because of cyanogens in tobacco leaf.

Thus, thiocyanate can amplify retinal damage along with carbon monoxide.

Carbon monoxide, however, blocks the transport of oxygen from hemoglobin to the tissues, and this adds to the damage caused by cyanide, which blocks the cytochrome enzymes within cells, thus preventing oxygen transfer inside the mitochondria of the cells.

The combination of carbon monoxide and cyanide is worse than either alone so that even at relatively low doses of dietary cyanides, irreversible damage to the retina of the eye can and does occur in smokers.

So smokers who drink garri are at greater risk of having eyesight problems.

At Clinicgists, we aren't saying taking in of garri is totally bad, but it's very advisable for those people who may be allergic to it to desist away from taking it, such as the ulcer patients, those with bad vision, diabetic patients, and it's better to debar yourself from even drinking it if you don't want to have any unwanted ailments aforementioned above.

Hope this helps.
